Remember that heating system check up you meant to have done last fall? Too bad you forgot because if you had set the appointment, the heating technician most likely would have changed out filters and tightened a few belts and the temperature in your house wouldn't be 40 degrees. Regular maintenance check ups help you avoid common furnace repairs such as these:

1. Thermostat issues. The brains of your heating system, a thermostat is often the culprit when your system malfunctions. Whether it's a worn-out battery or faulty wiring, changing out a thermostat is fairly inexpensive and can actually save you money if you actually program it.
2. Clogged filters. Although changing air conditioning filters is easy, furnace filters should be cleaned or changed by a heating contractor during a maintenance check. Clogged filters impair the system's airflow reducing heating capacity and efficiency. 
3. Ignition failure. Intermittent ignition will cause your system to heat unevenly or not at all. If your heating system has a pilot light, your system's about at the end of its lifespan and you might want to look into a replacement heating system.
