Plumbing Q & A - Ask the Plumber

Question: "Have a clogged toilet. It flushes somewhat - really gently and does not take stool with it. Using a punger did not work. Bought a toilet auger but can't seem to get it to go more than 6 inches into the toilet. Tried to push it in by hand as opposed to turning the handle - did not work. What should I do?"

10 Really Easy Ways to Unclog a Drain!

Unclog Drain RI

  1. Unclog Drain RI Use a professional drain cleaner. Something like Drano works well however most plumbers would say that these chemicals aren't good for your drain.

  2. Use a sink plunger. Place the plunger onto the drain and press on the handle. Make a few quick jerks on the handle before completely lifting it up. The jerks will create a powerful suction so that when you lift the plunger, it will suck up the gunk out of the drain.

  3. Be creative with a wire hanger. Straighten the hanger and make a small hook at the end of the wire. Insert it and start fishing.

  4. Use the plumber’s snake. Use the snake’s spinning action, going forward and reverse until you could unclog drain.

  5. Take advantage of the law of gravity. Plug the drain and fill the sink/tub completely with water. If you fill it with enough water, the weight and force of the water will obliterate the clog.

  6. Try plain old boiled water. Continuously pour hot water.

  7. Turn to the dish detergent. Pour some dish detergent and some boiled water. The detergent will act as a lubricant and unclog drain.

  8. Tamper with the U. Below the sink is a U-shaped pipe. Put a bucket below the pipe, turn off the water, and remove the pipe. Now you can manually clear the obstruction.

  9. Make your own natural drain cleaner. First, put about ¾ cup of baking soda down the drain. Then, run ½ cup of vinegar down. Be sure to plug the drain after you do this as the reaction between baking soda and vinegar will cause a fulmination of bubbles. Leave the solution inside for about 40 minutes; then pour boiled water.

  10. Try the wet and dry vacuum. Change the setting to vacuum liquids. Cover up the vent and let the monster suck the drain content up.

And there you have it, 10 really easy ways to unclog drain! Combating bad luck can be easy and fun!
