Most homeowners take for granted that clean, hot or cold water will appear when they turn on the tap. They give little thought to how they can improve the efficiency of their plumbing and, in turn, lower the amount of their utility bills. Increasing the efficiency of a plumbing system is concentrated in two distinct areas, the conservation of water and the conservation of energy.

Water Efficiency

Identifying and fixing any small drips or leaks is the first step in lowering your water usage. In addition, be sure to check all toilets for faulty stoppers that may occasionally hang up and let water escape through the drain. It is surprising how much water is wasted by even the smallest of leaks over the course of a month.

A slightly more expensive way to improve your water efficiency is to install low flow toilets and flow regulators on your showers. These may seem a nuisance at first but the amount of water saved can be significant.

Energy Efficiency

Improving the energy efficiency of your plumbing is moderately to significantly more difficult. On the more moderate side is ensuring that your hot water heater and pipes are adequately insulated to reduce heat loss. This practice will reduce the amount of hot water needed at the tap and thus reduce your utility bills.

Like water efficiency, energy efficiency can be improved with an investment in better technology. High efficiency or tankless water heaters are two excellent alternatives for decreasing your utility bills and increasing your plumbing systems overall efficiency.

The Results

Lessened water usage and more efficient use of water heating appliances will result in dramatically lower utility bills. A plumbing professional can help you do the calculations that will determine what particular appliance is right for your family’s needs.
